How we think about privacy
Metanet: A Commitment to Trustless Design and Privacy
At Metanet, we prioritize trustless design and uphold privacy as a fundamental right.
Our mission is to create the world’s best all-in-one community platform. While we’ve made significant progress, we remain committed to improving and reaching the high standards we’ve set for ourselves. Here’s an overview of our current efforts and future plans.
1. Where We Are Today
Web3 Wallet Login (Optional) Metanet users can log in with a Web3 wallet, avoiding the need to share personal information like an email or phone number. This option allows for complete anonymity and is entirely optional.
Empowering Communities We aim to decentralize control, giving community admins the flexibility to choose their preferred methods for user authentication. For example, some communities may require phone numbers, while others might rely solely on Web3 wallets and ENS names. Metanet remains neutral, offering multiple options for admins to customize their onboarding process.
Minimal Data Collection Metanet collects only the essential information needed to operate the platform. Soon, we’ll publish a comprehensive list of all data collected for transparency.
Encryption Currently, Metanet chat data is not end-to-end encrypted, offering privacy on par with platforms like Slack and Discord. However, by 2025, we plan to introduce end-to-end encryption for direct messages, groups, and private channels.
Enhanced Encryption for Sensitive Data We are working on encrypting all stored email addresses and phone numbers. We’re also exploring client-side encryption to secure sensitive data at rest.
Client-Side Encryption Metanet is built on the Matrix.org network, making it feasible to enable end-to-end encryption for chats in the future.
2. Bringing Web3 to the World
Metanet is dedicated to building a trustless environment that empowers users with choice and control:
Flexible Login Options While the simplest method is logging in with a phone number, users can also secure their account with a Web3 wallet, ENS name, or other on-chain data. Users who wish to fully decentralize their presence can remove their phone number from the Metanet database at any time.
User-Centric Approach Metanet puts power in the hands of users and communities, ensuring they can decide how to manage and protect their data. Our goal is to create a seamless onboarding experience and make Metanet the gateway for the next ten million users to join the decentralized web.
